Ten years after launching war against terrorism, the world is still suffering with lose of innocents lives in many countries. It is a regrettable loses of life. Many who supported the war in Iraq and Afghanistan later became disillusioned with the reasons for the war. Peace is still far away. It is unfortunate that the Western media totally ignored the fact that the Arab masses during the recent Arab upheavals were able to defeat Alqaida without any direct war on it.

Peace cannot come by itself unless we work for it. Islam is peace. This must be translated into actions. Following the guidance of Islam enriches the culture of peaceful coexistence and inter-communal and interreligious tolerance. Dialogue based on mutual respect and understanding amongst people should be effectively used for promoting peace and security, tolerance and global harmony.

We take with high esteem the resolution on “combating intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatization and discrimination, incitement to violence and violence against persons based on their religion or belief” which was adopted during the 16th Session of the Human Rights Council, in Geneva. The resolution was calling for various administrative, political and legislative actions to be taken at both national and international levels.

There are those using freedom of expression for promoting and disseminating an Anti- Muslim culture which is being assumed by Western Media. This double standard was in line with a consistent disinformation campaign using the basic technique of repetition in order to anchor in people’s mind, both consciously and subconsciously.

Despite the UN resolutions reflecting international community’s loud and clear stance against conflation of any religion with terrorism, the tendency, on the part of media and motivated individuals and groups was unrelenting. They are inflicting the psyche of over 1.5 billion Muslims by manipulating the portrayal of ‘collective guilt’

We should not ignore our problems or the sensational ways in which they are presented in the media; but we should be more objective and even-handed about Muslim experiences of life in the country where we live.

May peace prevail all over the world. Ameen.
